Traveling to see family or explore new places is exciting. But, sometimes, traveling can be a lot for a child. And for a kid with a chronic condition, it also makes matters worse. However, you and your little one can have happy, healthy trips when you visit Dr. Baqir Malik of Canton Center Pediatrics, serving Canton, MI, and the nearby region, for pediatric travel care.
Motion Sickness
Some children have motion sickness, and it's more common in kids with one parent with it.
Fortunately, your child can still travel comfortably because our Canton, MI, pediatrician can prescribe motion sickness medication to help your child, whether you're traveling by car, boat, plane, or train.
We can also recommend acupuncture bands, herbal remedies, or other holistic ways to reduce your kid's symptoms.
Jet Lag
While you, as an adult, may be able to cope easily with jet lag, your child may struggle.
We strongly recommend that you adjust your child's sleep schedule to fit with the time zone you're traveling to. For instance, if you're going by plane at night, encourage your little one to sleep on the plane. If you get off the plane earlier than their usual wake time, suggest they go back to sleep for a bit at the hotel.
Once you're in the new place, try to get them on a routine. Eat meals around normal times and set a bedtime, even if it's a little later than usual.
Bug Bites, Sun Exposure, and Injuries
We can help you create a pediatric travel care kit to address minor issues that may arise when traveling, such as sunburn, a bug bite, or a minor scrape or cut.
Chronic Condition Care
Properly manage your child's chronic condition, even when you're out and about.
For instance, if your child is diabetic, you'll need to choose foods that won't cause blood sugar spikes. You may want to create a special travel kit with insulin, syringes, lancets, and a monitor. If possible, maybe acquire a second set that includes a monitor and insulin other than the ones your child always uses. That way, if you or they should happen to forget it, they still have medication and a way to monitor their sugar.
The same applies to other health conditions that require your child to need medication or supplies.
Moreover, you may want to pack only the pills your child needs and a few spares and leave the bottle at home.
At Canton Center Pediatrics, serving Canton, MI, Dr. Malik can help you determine the right pediatric travel care package for your child or assist you in managing common travel-related illnesses.
